Phoenix Kaiser
I was raised on the foggy Marin coast, absorbing the elements from a young age and restlessly creating. My artwork is wide-ranging in media and interests—from ceramics to painting to metal and stone. Yet I find that all of my works, regardless of media, are created with a sense of being drawn to absurdity, beauty, and reality (whatever that may be).
My artwork focuses on the immediacy and tension between an intersection of natural materials and humanity. I have always been drawn to the earth, the ocean, and the natural processes we witness daily: decay and growth, weight, scale, simplicity, and confusion. But when these materials and processes interact with humanity, they morph, change, and intensify or disappear.
One of the most important aspects of my work that I am perpetually considering is restraint - the idea of showcasing energy through absence or process. As an active kid, my maximalist tendencies always seemed to force themselves into my works, but as I have grown, the simplicity of nuance and absurdity seems to convey more and more what I am thinking.
As I push forward creatively, I am leaning into my sensitivity and the endless possibilities to create and transcend media. I wish to attend an interdisciplinary studio art program to expand my work further in various artistic realms - always with a grounding in sculpture. I wish to include scale and physicality more deeply and use materials to promote the viewer’s involvement, ultimately creating a deeper connection and relatability between the viewer and my art.
